Hello
Slowpoke grows flowers, produce, herbs, honey, and much more. We use organic practices and are a Certified Naturally Grown farm. Farming for us is an act of ethical stewardship in both our business and our cultivation. We follow minimal till methods to work in partnership with the land, encouraging biodiversity and resilience. Every choice is guided by care for the soil, the ecosystem, and the communities we belong to. Located in Varina, just outside of Richmond, VA, on Powhatan land that continues to give generously, we celebrate a craft as ancient as it is alive. It ties us to those who came before and those still to come. Slowpoke is a maturing child, an ongoing creative project, and a commitment to the quiet power of growth that carries on, authorless.
Community Partnerships
We are very proud to be a part of River City Flower Exchange, a grower-owned Cooperative in Richmond, VA. Membership entails ascribing to fair market prices which do not undercut our fellow growers, assuring mutual benefit and continued business. The Co-Op works to bolster the importance of buying local, highlighting the economic and ecological benefits to our community. All flowers not sold on the retail floor are donated weekly to Reinhart House.
In times of surplus, we are fortunate enough to be able to provide food for our friends at Matchbox Mutual Aid. MMA is an organization with many functions, primarily the aggregation, processing and transport of donated foods for distribution to the public, often in collaboration with Food Not Bombs at Monroe Park as well as the many Free Fridges throughout Richmond.
Equity and Opportunity
We offer Sliding Scale pricing and the option for work-trade food & flowers in light of societal inequity and the idea that money doesn’t trump joy in this small corner of the world. If you are without proper nourishment, we encourage you to contact us for emergency food boxes or assistance in locating the appropriate social services and resources. We encourage anyone interested in learning to grow food for themselves and their families to come by the farm.
If the “Supported” option on our sliding scale is still out of reach for your budget, we would like to hear from you. Please let us know how we can still honor the value of our own hard work, and provide you the gift of local food and flowers which you deserve. We are open to alternative forms of compensation. Everyone is skilled in their own way! We invite collaboration and further creation together.
